Goonhavern Individuals

John Edward Westcott 1849-1921

John Edward Westcott originally hailed from Drewsteignton in Devon where he worked with his father as a thatcher. Born in 1849 he enlisted in the Grenadier Guards in Sept 1870 age 20, and did 21 years, leaving his last posting (in Edmonton London)in Sept 1891. He saw action in the 1880s Egyptian campaign, particularly the battle of Tel el Kebir, and was awarded the Egypt Star and Medal.

Sometime between leaving the Army in Sept 1891 and the Census of April 1901 he’d got a job as a Foreman at the Dynamite works at Cligga, Perranporth. That maybe because of his Army service and experience, he must have had a sort of caretaking role at Cligga in 1911 because the works was in abeyance at that time, however he still described himself in that census as both an Army Pensioner and Explosives Manufacturer Worker in the 1911 census.

John Edward Westcott was 65 yrs old in 1914, maybe retired from Cligga, and came and lived and ran the New Inn pub until his death in 1921, his wife Elizabeth Alma Westcott may well have continued to run the pub, with her son Percy & his wife who by then also had The Forge at Goonhavern.

    1. John Edward Westcott was my Great Great Grandfather. His daughter Alma married my Great Grandfather Charles Stokes. I still live in Cornwall. It would be nice to make contact with another branch of my family.
