Mining in our Area

Wheal Vlow Mine – Circa 1928. The mine is now fully equipped and this photograph shows, left to right: barracks for the miners, electricity power station, headgear on Hallett’s shaft, miners dry, workshops etc.

It should be explained that the barracks were built to accommodate men who lived some distance from the mine and elected to return home only at week-ends. In many cases this was a necessity primarily because of the time spent in travelling and cost. In the background is the vast area of sandhills between Perranporth and Cubert.
