Looks like being about 1972 or 73, because the new shop is finished and you can see the “Off Licence Open” sign on the end dormer. At Xmas about 1977 or so, my wife (Jeni) and I visited, and on Xmas Eve my sister Karen went out on the roof and hung two pairs of underpants (a present for me) from the sign – the idea being that in the morning I would fling open the bedroom curtains and see my (red and purple) Xmas presents hanging in front of me. I knew nothing about this until Boxing Day when Mrs Manfield brought two pairs of wet underpants into the shop, saying she’s found them hanging on the plants in her front garden and thought they might have blown away from our place…
(I always suspected that my mother had told half the village what the plan was…)
Thanks Stephen, very difficult to date some of these photos, peoples memories are always slightly different, it’s a best guess, and usually not far out as with this one. Interesting tale, bet that certainly caused a laugh.
