Goonhavern Show

Show Day

SATURDAY 14th JULY 2018 2.15PM

Goonhavern Show went extremely well again in 2017. This only happened because so many people gave up valuable time to help out which made it a wonderful team effort.
A mention does need to go to the New Inn for their support and also the W.I. for their usual wonderful input.

We are not naming any individuals as we do not want to miss any person out but volunteers, Goonhavern School, judges, sponsors, schedule advertisers, committee members all did a sterling job and a great big thank you to you all for preparing and providing the exhibits and supporting us on the day.

The show
This popular and very traditional Cornish village show offers a lovely day out for all the family. The BBQ, cream teas and refreshments stalls keep everyone fed and watered, the band provides the music, and the traditional kids’ entertainment and tombola complement the enthusiastic competition entries of gardeners, cooks, photographers and artists of all ages. Genuine community spirit is strong in Goonhavern and this show is the jewel in our crown.

We have a wide range of categories in our show schedule. Some are restricted to age group, some are restricted by experience and some are simply open to all. You can download a copy of all the categories below. If you do well, you’ll have a very good chance of walking away with one of our awards or even a trophy.

There are no events to display

The show relies on the tireless hard work of our show committee and friends, and the donations of our generous show sponsors.

Our shows are always a great success enjoyed by all. This old show gallery has many photo’s recording some of the prize winners and general pictures from the show.

goonhavern_show_1 We often have help and support from some of the generous local businesses. This year we would like to offer our thanks to John Nicholls Funeral Service and thanks to Bridge Stores and Goonhavern Garden Centre for providing raffle prizes and The Print Environment who donated our huge colourful banners.

We have had great financial support from Perranzabuloe Parish Council and Perranporth Gardens Charity. Huge thanks to them for accepting our applications on the show’s behalf.

For further information by telephone, please call Tim or Lizzy on 01872 859258. Please only call at sociable hours.

Unless you give a few hours per year helping us put the show together, it will die. Over the last few years we have lost several committee members due to health, moving out of the village etc.

We need committee members and helpers. We are talking about one crazy day, a few pre-show evenings and a few evenings for meetings each year.

Not much to ask is it?
If you can’t be bothered, why should we? There are a handful of us trying to do what would be a doddle if the work was shared. Come on Goonhavern, show us what you are made of! This is more than 50 years of history and tradition that could die through the apathy that is spreading throughout our country.

Is Cornwall different? Is it? Prove it, like we are. Show the holiday makers and visitors that we are made of different stuff. We keep our traditions alive and well. We know what a Cornish family day out was and still is.

  1. Have entries closed!? We’re away currently but was going to enter large garden and a garden container.

  2. The Goonhavern show is wonderful every year me and my family thoroughly enjoy it and we can’t wait until. Next year we have all ready started !!!!!!!

    1. It is amazing that it is still running. To have continuous commitment from local residents for something like this is rare. This community spirit is the main reason I pay to keep the and .net domain names as well maintain and pay for this website.

What Derek has done with the history section is awesome and represents hundreds of hours of work. We now have an archive that could last forever. It is, in my humble opinion, priceless. I now pay for backup storage in case the server dies, as rebuilding it from scratch is not something that even dedicated Derek would like to endure.

  3. Does anyone have any information or photographs relating to the history of Goonhavern Show? It would make an interesting addition to this section of the website.

    1. Simon, I have asked about this for a few years in committee meetings, but have not had much joy to date. This is one of the reasons I created this site, so it would be great if the stories and pictures were on here for all to understand the commitment that has been made over the years.

Derek has great contacts and local knowledge, so we have a better chance now, to get that history in public archive. If you go by what he has managed to do with the history section of the site, it could be brilliant.
