Mining in our Area

West Chiverton Mine – Circa 1927. A view of the Stamps Engine House and Boiler House at this one time prolific silver/lead mine.

This house was wantonly destroyed as a military demolition exercise just after the end of the Second World War. The 26in cylinder rotary stamps engine was sold to the South Condurrow mine at Troon, near Camborne in 1881 and converted to a winding engine for hoisting on Marshall’s shaft. In the background is the derelict engine house on Batter’s shaft which had contained an 80in pumping engine.
